Rinzai

Rinzai monk of the Edo period. He made koans central to training and devised new ones, among them the sound of one hand. The Rinzai head temples' joint history counts every present Rinzai line as descending from him, through his heir Gasan Jitō and Gasan's heirs Inzan Ien and Takujū Kosen. The Zazen wasan is traditionally attributed to him.

Hakuin spent most of his life at Shōin-ji, a small temple in Suruga. He was a prolific writer and painter, and taught lay people as well as monks. Whether he received formal transmission from Dōkyō Etan is debated; he regarded Etan as his teacher.
